American Black Bear

(Ursus americanus). Patient Number 22-245.

Date of admission: May 22, 2022.
Reason for admission: Orphaned.

Patient History:
The American black bear is the most widely distributed bear species in North America and is the world’s most common bear species. American black bear continue to inhabit much of their historical Canadian range. Preferred habitat consists of sparsely settled hardwood forested areas. American black bears are omnivores, but up to 85% of their diet consists of vegetation.

When emerging from hibernation in the spring, black bears will feed on carrion and newborn ungulates. During the summer, they will feed on honey and a variety of plant species with their diet consisting primarily of fruits and berries. During the autumn months, black bears actively search out nuts. Their preferred varieties include hazelnuts, acorns, and pine nuts.

This black bear cub was brought to AIWC after being found alone running alongside a road. Ample searching revealed that there were no signs that his mother was still in the area, so he was immediately brought to AIWC. He was quite small on intake, weighing in at only 2.5 kg. Apart from being thin, and dehydrated, he was in overall good body condition. This cub and two others returned to the wild in fall 2022 and went on to den for the winter. Thank you for helping to support his care!
