American Kestrel (Falco sparverius)

Date of admission: April 26, 2026.
Reason for admission: Head Trauma.

Patient History:

The American Kestrel is North America’s smallest falcon, yet one of its most visually striking. Found throughout North and South America, this adaptable raptor is commonly seen in a wide range of habitats, including grasslands, agricultural fields, deserts, and even urban environments. They are frequently observed perched on wires, fence posts, or branches, carefully scanning the ground for movement below.

Adult male kestrels are easily recognized by their blue-gray wings, head, and tail, contrasted with a rich rusty-brown back and tail. Their face is marked by a distinctive black vertical “mustache” stripe, set against pale facial plumage. The underparts are light with bold black spotting. Females share similar markings but are more uniformly rusty-brown with heavier streaking across the chest and underside.

American Kestrels are highly skilled, opportunistic hunters. Their diet consists primarily of insects, small mammals, and small birds, and they are known for their remarkable ability to hover in place, known as “kiting,” while scanning for prey before executing a rapid, precise dive. Their dietary flexibility allows them to thrive in a variety of environments and changing conditions.

Nesting typically occurs in natural tree cavities, abandoned woodpecker holes, or appropriately sized nest boxes. Females usually lay a clutch of 4–5 eggs, with both parents sharing incubation duties and later collaborating in the feeding and care of their young after hatching.

We recently admitted an adult male American Kestrel following a suspected window collision. He is currently presenting with neurological symptoms consistent with head trauma resulting from the impact. Fortunately, no fractures or external wounds have been identified at this time.

He is receiving supportive care and treatment for head trauma, and we are closely monitoring his neurological status and overall progress. Thank you for supporting his care!
