Date of admission: Oct 15, 2024.
Reason for admission: Eye Trauma.

Patient History:

The Northern Goshawk is a powerful and agile bird of prey known for its intense hunting skills and fierce territoriality. Preferring dense, mature forests across the Northern Hemisphere, these raptors are masters of stealth, often ambushing prey like squirrels, rabbits, and game birds with swift, calculated attacks. They defend their nests with impressive aggression, sometimes chasing off intruders much larger than themselves.

During the breeding season, Northern Goshawks exhibit impressive aerial displays to attract mates, with both parents later contributing to feeding their chicks. Historically valued in falconry for their skill, these birds are still highly admired for their adaptability and strength. While well-suited to colder climates and often staying year-round in northern regions, they face habitat threats from deforestation. Conservation efforts play a key role in safeguarding the landscapes that sustain these resilient forest hunters.

This goshawk was rescued from the front yard of a home in NW Calgary after it was found unable to fly. It's rare to see goshawks in residential areas, so the finders immediately called for assistance. Upon examination, we discovered a retinal tear, likely caused by a collision while pursuing prey. Currently on antibiotics and anti-inflammatories for eye trauma, this goshawk is already showing good flying skills after just a few weeks in care. It will remain with us until it has fully recovered and can fly and hunt independently. Thank you for supporting their care!
