Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris).

Date of admission: May, 2026.

Patient History:

The American Red Squirrel is one of Alberta’s smallest and boldest native mammals. Despite their size, these energetic little squirrels are fiercely territorial and remarkably industrious, building multiple nests and carefully storing food caches, or middens, to survive long winters. Also known as pine squirrels or “chickarees,” they play an important ecological role by helping disperse seeds and support healthy forest ecosystems.

Spring is baby season for red squirrels, when mothers raise litters of one to five kits in carefully hidden nests tucked into tree cavities or dense branches. But storms, tree trimming, habitat disturbance, and domestic pet encounters can leave young squirrels orphaned and in need of care.

Orphaned red squirrel kits are among the young mammals regularly admitted to AIWC. In 2025 alone, AIWC cared for 18 red squirrels. Many arrive tiny, fragile, and dependent on specialized formula feeding before progressing through multiple life stages in care. As they grow, they transition to species-appropriate diets, larger enclosures for climbing and exploration, and opportunities to practice natural foraging behaviours needed for life in the wild. Rehabilitating squirrels takes time, specialized husbandry, and carefully staged development to ensure these busy little animals can return to the forests equipped with the skills they need to survive.

Your sponsorship helps provide formula, food, medical care, habitat enrichment, and expert rehabilitation support for red squirrel kits in care this season, and for future young squirrels who may arrive in need. Your support helps give these tiny forest acrobats a second chance in the wild!
