Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus).

Date of admission: September 9, 2026.
Reason for admission: Beak Injury.

Patient History:

In 1977, Alberta schoolchildren voted to choose a provincial bird, selecting the Great Horned Owl; a distinction the species still holds today. With its prominent feather tufts, large yellow eyes, and powerful talons, this owl is one of Alberta’s most recognizable birds. Great Horned Owls are found throughout the province in a variety of habitats, including forests, grasslands, parks, and river valleys. Adaptable and resilient, they remain in Alberta year-round, equipped with thick feathers that help them withstand even the coldest winter weather.

Great Horned Owls are primarily nocturnal hunters, relying on exceptional hearing and keen eyesight to locate prey in low light. Their specialized feathers allow them to fly almost silently, helping them approach unsuspecting prey. Their powerful feet and talons can deliver a remarkably strong grip, and their varied diet includes rodents, rabbits and hares, birds, and other small animals. These owls often form long-term pair bonds and may reuse the nests of other large birds rather than building their own. They begin nesting surprisingly early in the year, often laying two to three eggs in late winter, with both parents contributing to the care and protection of their young.

This Great Horned Owl arrived at AIWC after being struck by a vehicle, leaving him with a cracked and severely misaligned upper beak. Thankfully, his prognosis was good, and our veterinary team was able to carefully realign and stabilize his beak using small bands and pins. He will need to keep this support in place for several weeks while he heals, along with medication, pain management, and close monitoring from his care team.

Your sponsorship helps provide the nutritious food, veterinary treatment, rehabilitation, specialized housing, and daily care wildlife patients need throughout their recovery. Thank you for helping give this Great Horned Owl the chance to heal and, hopefully, return to life in the wild!
