Common Raven (Corvus corax).

Date of admission: April 4, 2026.
Reason for admission: Physical Injury.

Patient History:

Common Ravens are the largest of all passerine (song) birds and among the most intelligent. They are large, all-black birds with a thick bill, shaggy throat feathers, and a heavy build. In sunlight, their plumage often shows an iridescent sheen of blue and purple. Although sometimes confused with crows, ravens are larger, with longer wings, more pronounced fingered wingtips, and can weigh up to two kilograms.

They are widely distributed across Canada and occupy a broad range of habitats, including forests, tundra, grasslands, deserts, and coastal regions, as well as human-altered landscapes. Their adaptability reflects their highly developed cognitive abilities.

Ravens are known for advanced intelligence, problem-solving skills, and learning capacity. They can distinguish between meaningful and irrelevant environmental cues and are opportunistic omnivores, feeding on insects, small mammals, eggs, carrion, grains, berries, and human food sources. They often forage in pairs. Nests are built on cliffs, trees, and man-made structures, with females constructing most of the structure from sticks. Clutches typically contain 4–6 eggs, incubated for 18–21 days, with both parents involved in feeding and raising the young until fledging at 5–6 weeks.

This common raven was admitted after being found unable to stand with swelling at the right elbow. Radiographs ruled out fracture or joint injury. While limb function gradually improved, ongoing ataxia and reduced grasping ability suggested possible spinal inflammation or trauma.

He was started on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory treatment, resulting in rapid improvement over two weeks. He is now weight-bearing, able to perch and self-feed, and is flying short distances within his enclosure. His recovery remains very positive, and continued improvement is expected. Thank you for supporting his continued care!
