Red Fox Kit (Vulpes vulpes).

Date of admission: May, 2026.

Patient History:

The Red Fox is one of Alberta’s most adaptable and charismatic wild mammals. Found from prairie grasslands to forest edges, and sometimes even in urban spaces, red foxes are clever hunters, devoted parents, and an important part of healthy ecosystems.

Despite their name, not all red foxes are red. Some may have brown, black, or even silver coats. In 2025, AIWC admitted seven red foxes, including one particularly special patient, our first fox with a rare dark morph coat variation (bottom image). Late spring and early summer often bring fox kits into care after injury, orphaning, den disturbances, or displacement. Young foxes require highly specialized rehabilitation, and whenever possible, we raise kits together. For social species like foxes, growing up alongside others of their kind is an important part of rehabilitation, allowing them to play, interact, and develop the natural skills they will need to survive in the wild.

Upon arrival, fox kits are carefully assessed and quarantined before being introduced to compatible companions. As they grow, they require species-appropriate diets, enrichment, secure habitat spaces, and careful management that encourages wild behaviours while minimizing human habituation.

AIWC regularly receives six to eight foxes annually, and we have had strong success returning these remarkable animals to the wild where they belong.

Rehabilitating foxes takes time, expertise, and significant resources, but watching young kits grow from vulnerable arrivals into confident wild animals ready for release is one of the great rewards of baby season. Your sponsorship helps provide food, medical care, habitat enrichment, and expert rehabilitation support for fox kits in care this season, and future foxes who may need a second chance.
