Patient History:

Red foxes are native and widespread across Alberta, found in every natural region and making their homes in woodlots, farm shelterbelts, brushy coulees, and urban green spaces. Clever and adaptable omnivores, they are known for their rust-coloured fur, bushy white-tipped tails, excellent night vision, and remarkable hunting abilities. Their keen eyesight, acute hearing, and powerful sense of smell help them locate prey; even the slightest movement of an ear may be enough to pinpoint a hidden rabbit.

This summer, AIWC welcomed an adult female red fox into care after she was spotted injured and limping around Cochrane Lake with plastic snow fencing caught around her neck. Once members of the community noticed she had taken shelter in a culvert, a rescue mission was launched. Twenty-four hours later, she was safely contained and brought into our care. Upon arrival, she was hypothermic, lethargic, and showing signs of injury. She needed medication, fluids, warming, and plenty of monitoring from our team.

Thankfully, it didn’t take long for her personality to start coming back. After just a few days in care, she started getting feisty, which, in wildlife rehabilitation, is a great sign! Her appetite and mobility improved, her temperature stabilized, and by August 11, she was giving us some serious attitude. Soon after, she was cleared to move outside. She still has some recovering to do, but this exciting milestone brings her one step closer to returning to the wild.
