Patient History:

The Wilson’s Snipe is a small to medium-sized shorebird with a white belly and beautifully mottled brown feathers that help it blend into its surroundings. Its most recognizable feature is its long, slender bill, which can nearly equal the length of its body.

Have you ever wondered why Wilson’s Snipe look so stocky compared to other shorebirds? Their rounded appearance comes from their exceptionally large pectoral (breast) muscles, which make up nearly a quarter of their body weight, the highest proportion among shorebirds. These powerful muscles help them take off quickly and reach impressive flight speeds estimated at up to 60 miles per hour!

Unlike many birds, Wilson’s Snipe have eyes positioned toward the back and sides of their head, giving them a nearly all-around view of their surroundings. This adaptation helps them detect predators while they forage. Their long bill is perfectly designed for searching through soft mud, where they find worms, insect larvae, and other small invertebrates. A flexible tip allows them to grasp prey beneath the surface while keeping much of their bill buried in the mud.

These unique adaptations are why Wilson’s Snipe thrive in wet habitats such as marshes and flooded meadows, where insects are abundant, and vegetation provides important cover from predators and safe areas for nesting. During the breeding season, male Wilson’s Snipe perform a unique aerial display called “winnowing,” using their tail feathers to create a distinctive sound while attracting mates and defending territory. Females build well-hidden nests on the ground among dense vegetation near wetlands, where their chicks hatch and grow under careful parental care before becoming independent.

This Wilson’s Snipe nestling was brought into our care after narrowly avoiding a vehicle collision in High River. Despite being orphaned at a young age, it is doing well in rehabilitation and will be ready for release once it has developed the skills needed to survive independently in the wild. Your sponsorship helps provide this young bird with the specialized care, nutrition, and support it needs to grow into a healthy adult and return to Alberta’s landscapes!
